My swim lesson curriculum is based on a logical progression. I want to assure the swimmer understand the fundamentals of swimming, safety in and around water, and technique before progressing onto more difficult skills. This method is incredibly successful in becoming swim safe and learning how to swim. I have honed my style and method of teaching for over 10 years, and have seen amazing results in my swimmers. Below are my fundamental goals and path to all of my swimmers' success!
My goal for all of my swimmers is to ensure that you are safe in and around all bodies of water: Poolside, Beach, Lakes etc. I ensure that you and your child understand what it means to be water safe and how to incorporate that outside of our lessons together and how to incorporate that into real life situations.
When learning to swim, there is a clear difference in becoming a swimmer and being swim safe, in order to identify if someone is swim safe, they need to be able to complete the following sequence unassisted, and consistent. While you learn some swim techniques during this stage, this first step is focused on survival and drowning prevention application to real life scenarios.
Topics Covered:
1. Basic Water Safety: Lifeguard Recognition, Knowing body limits, Conserving Energy, At home safety, Ocean Safety, Floatation Devices, General Pool Rules
2. Survival: You will learn what to do if you fall in the water and are alone, how to survive and conserve energy while exiting and calling for help.
3. Breath Control & Swim Fundamentals:
- Floating on front & Back
- Directional Changes & Rolling front to back
- Water Acclimation & Underwater Exploration
- Arm and Leg action on front and Back
Safety Sequence: Unassisted
1. Jump into deep water
2. Roll to back and Float for 10 seconds, While calling for help
3. Roll to stomach swim to edge/stairs and climb out
I teach and use hydrodynamic principals in all stages of learning to ensure you are swimming in the most effective way, while using your energy intentionally and correctly. Used for all ages, this reduces the chance of exhaustion, which can lead to drowning if not trained correctly.
Topics Covered:
1. Swimming Basics:
- Front & Back Glides
- Kicking on front & Back
- Advanced Breath Control: Side Breathing, Timing etc.
- Strokes: Freestyle, Elementary Backstroke, Breaststroke, Side Stroke
- Hydrodynamic Principals & Learning to swim safely without injury or strain
- Treading Water
2. Endurance & Combining Tasks: You will learn how to be strong and independently perform all skills at your own pace. We will combine swim skills to ensure your swimmer is able to play, practice and have fun safely and is ready for anything that comes their way.
Swimming is dynamic and full of multitasking and body awareness. You will understand how your body moves through the water and why your body does certain things when we move differently, allowing you/your child to make smart decisions in the water, making that the most important drowning prevention strategy.
Practice makes progress and consistency. It is important that all swimmers continue to practice and refine skills to ensure they know and can successfully demonstrate all skills to continue to be swim safe.
Topics Covered:
- Technique & Drills for continued challenges and continued refinement of skills
